What a well-built distribution board looks like

A distribution board tells you a lot about the quality of the whole installation. Here are five things to look for.

First, colour-coded phases and neutral, so any engineer can see what is connected where. Second, every circuit numbered and listed on a schedule inside the door. Third, cables dressed in straight runs and secured with ties, not stuffed into the enclosure.

Fourth, protection devices from a recognised brand with the right ratings for the load. Fifth, a record of testing results from the day of handover.

If you can see these five, the rest of the installation is usually in good hands.
